An R-rated stoner flick? Judd Apatow? Seth Rogen? Expectations were high, pardon the pun. The trailer made the movie look like a cross between Dazed and Confused and the Beastie Boys’ classic Sabotage video.
Expectations: dashed. One (obvious) way to gauge a comedy’s success is to count the number of times you laugh out loud, and I’ll be damned if I can remember more than one (courtesy of Danny R. McBride, who is today what Jack Black was five years ago and is by far the best thing about Pineapple Express).
From the opening scene, a painful Reefer Madness riff, this one clangs. Memo to Apatow: the fact that you can get any movie made doesn’t mean you should.
